These days, NHRA drivers are a mille-feuille of Nomex and carbon fiber. Contemporary Top-Fuel drivers wear 15-20 pounds of fireproof layers from their underpants to their driving boots. But it wasn't always like that. Decades earlier, legends like Don Garlits, Shirley Muldowney, and Don Prudhomme would wear nothing but leather jackets, goggles, and bandannas—little more than some extra skin to protect them from a drag racing driver’s biggest fear of all: fire.
